The main goal of the course is to give you a basic understanding of the marine environment, and especifically so for the tropical reef outside you doorstep. The goal is not to teach you to recognize a whole lot of diffent species, this is something you can do on all that leasure time you have in paradise. Instead I will concentrate on the description of the environment and the different groups of living plants and animals we have in the oceans. If you become familiar and confident with this, itīs easy to go further into the species level on your own. To suit all of you, I start from the beginning, so you do not need any specific biological education as Get of slides or to a specific slide, all which are taken around Panagsama Beach / Pescador or Balicasag Is. By purpose I have not provide you with a list of species on the slides. This will be one of your assignments.

Course Overview:

INTRO WITH BOOKLIST...
Today we start with a brief introduction to the course and the first two lessons, called Introduction to Oceanography and Taxonomy. Below you find a desciption of the course, the methods we will use, a recommended booklist...
OCEANOGRAPHY...
The study of the oceans is a multidiciplinary science that involves geology, physics, chemistry and biology. Many oceanographic problems are interdiciplinary and require the co - operation among scientists of varied backgrounds...
CLASSIFICATION...
The classification of living organisms is called systematics. It is one of the most fundamental components of biology. One of the first things anyone needs to know about an organism is its name...
PLANTS...
There are only a few groups of marine plants but they are nevertheless very varied. Apart from a small number of flowering plants (seagrasses and mangroves) marine vegetation of the coral reefs consists of a variety of algae or seaweeds...
PORIFERA...
These animal are colonies of thousands of cells, loosely held together in a "matrix" of threads with an internal supporting "skeleton" of spicules (either of calcium carbonate or silica) or spongin fibres, or both...
CNIDARIA...
This is a large group of over 10,000 species, found on shores, reefs, and oceans of the world. Well - known and easily recognized animals such as jelly fishes, anemones and corals, are included in the phylum as well as a host of totally dissimilar forms...
CTENOPHORA...
These are a small group of extremely delicate, pelagic animals superficially resembling the jelly - fish but differing from them in several ways There are no stinging cells in the tentacles and they are propelled through the water by the beating of...
PLATYHELMINTHES, MEMERTINI and ANNELIDA...
The "worms", as grouped here, do not constitute a naturally related group, but because of their general form and the relatively few species that would be observed by non - specialists, they are considered together here for your convenience...
ARTHOPODA...
The Arthropods comprise the large phylum of living creatures with roughly one million species. Of these, the subphylum Crustacea is the only sizable group (perhaps 45,000 species) occurring in shallow tropical waters, a very small part of the entire phylum...
MOLLUSCA...
The historical popularity of shell collecting and the durable nature of the hard shells of specimens, with a wealth of characters available, are the reasons for molluscs having perhaps the best known taxonomy of all marine invertebrate groups...
BRYOZOA, PHORNOIDA AND BRACHIOPODA...
The three phyla in this section are superficially quite different. However, because they share a common feeding structure, the lophophore they are grouped together. The lophophore is a ciliated tentacular crown surrounding the mouth...
ECHINODERMATA...
All adult Echinoderms display a unique five - part radial symmetry, which seems to serve their sedentary benthic lifestyle well. They also possess an internal skeleton of calcium carbonate plates...
FISH...
In the Phillippine waters, you can find more than 2200 species of fish. It can be seen as an impossible task to learn to identify all these species, but as we have discussed before its better to begin with learning to recognise the major groups...
FINAL EXAM...
The answers should be sent individually to me by e - mail, and I will give you feedback as soon as possible. I canīt forbid you not to cooperate and in some instances I encourage you to do so, but try to understand the questions yourself...

Slides:

SLIDES FOR IDENTIFICATION...
Jesper brought some slides with him from Sweden, all which are taken around Panagsama Beach / Pescador or Balicasag Is. During most of the lessons I will refer to a group of slides or to a specific slide...
